When you want to do remote desktop from your Windows based machine to another Windows based machine, you might not need to use third party tool. Windows already provided you with its built-in tool called Remote Desktop Connection. Just like other remote desktop tool, has all basic features for remote purposes. It is very useful for user support in a LAN.
In this tutorial, I will guide you how to perform Remote Desktop Connection in LAN. I’ve never perform any Windows remote connection over the internet. I also use Windows XP for this tutorial and Windows 7 as the remote computer.
Before we perform it, there are two important requirements :
- The remote computer has a username along with the password. You must set it up first. This is used when you logon to the remote computer. You will be asked the remote user password. Without the correct password we will never be able to do remote connection.
- Both the local and the remote machine must enable incoming and outgoing connection. It’s just like you open the door so people can get into your house. You must not need to worry about the security. This settings is only used when remote desktop connection will be performed. If not, you could change these settings later.
Okay, I think you know how to set username password in Windows OS. So I will not explain that here. I will explain you about incoming and outgoing connection settings. I will tell you the steps :
- Open Windows Explorer >> right click on “My Computer” icon
- You will see a System Properties box with some tabs in there, click on the “Remote” tab.
- Check all the check boxes available there and you have opened outgoing and incoming remote connections.
Now, you have configured everything and ready to remote your remote machine. To open Windows Remote Desktop Connection tool, follow these steps : Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Communications >> Remote Desktop Connection.

A box will appear and you will see a text box in there. That box is where you put the IP address the remote computer. For example, the remote computer’s IP address is 192.168.1.3. Type that in the text box and click Connect. Wait for the process and if the connection is successfully established, your screen will be blank for a second. After that, you will see a logon screen. Below is the picture of the Windows 7 logon screen. Then, I choose “Other User”.
Now, I must fill in the username and the password of the remote user.
I type in “oLenGk” (weird name..), type the password, and hit Enter. Voila, I have successfully remote my friends machine. You could do anything on the remote computer.
If you look at the remote machine, you will see that the remote machine will be on the logon screen mode waiting for the right user to logon. If you’re done with the remote machine, it’s time to disconnect. There are two ways to disconnect the remote connection. First, the user on the remote desktop logon to Windows. Second, the local machine shutdown the remote machine from the Remote Desktop Connection window. Actually this doesn’t shut down the remote machine. It just disconnect the connection.
Remote Desktop Connection is really useful in my opinion. We could learn how to perform remote connection to other computer. This will improve our knowledge about computer networks. We could also maintain remote server from the same LAN. Honestly, I don’t really don’t know if this could be performed over the internet. So, this is only what I can explain to you.
